Why Custom Shower Doors are a Better Option

If you are looking into a bathroom remodel, or a brand new bathroom you may be asking yourself, why do I want custom glass shower doors, when it seems easier, and cheaper to just purchase a cheap shower curtain? Although you may not realize it, your bathroom is going to be one of the most visited rooms of the house. It will be used by anyone who lives there and guests. Walking into a bathroom, a persons eyes are immediately going to be pointed to the focal point of the bathroom, the shower doors.

If you’re living in your dream home, and the rest of your house is beautiful, your bathroom should be just as well appointed. Shower doors add a custom amount of elegance and add resale value to your home. Shower curtains while inexpensive need to be constantly replaced. New vinyl shower curtains, lead to many problems that custom shower doors do not. Here are some advantages to custom shower doors.

Custom Shower Doors don’t release chemicals

Shower Doors are made with only safety tempered and manufactured glass, which will not release any chemicals in the air. Vinyl shower curtains are made of the same chemicals as PVC piping. When enclosed in a shower they release chemicals including DEHP, a suspected carcinogen, and other toxins, which can lead to headaches, nausea, and kidney problems. If you’ve ever showered with a new shower curtain and notice a fresh plastic smell for the first few washes, that’s the smell of chemicals your breathing in. Once a shower curtain is used, mold can begin to form at the bottom and work its way into every shower taken, leading to respiratory problems.

Shower Doors don’t need to be replaced as often

Like windows to your home, shower doors don’t need to be replaced nearly as often as a disposable shower curtain. Shower doors are almost worry free in their maintenance and upkeep. If you change your shower curtain once a month, to avoid mold forming at the bottom, that means over a years time, you will have had to buy and replace your shower curtains 12 times. Remembering to do that monthly is a hassle. Shower doors are installed with a protective coating that keep them looking clean and polished for years to come. For cleaning they usually require a light wipe down like the rest of your shower.

Custom Shower Doors Are Designed In All Shapes and Sizes

If you’ve ever been standing in a smaller shower, the only option to make it marginally larger is with a curved curtain rod. These can bend, bow, and be harder to fit in on your own. There’s nothing worse than the shower curtain falling down mid shower. Custom shower doors on the other hand can be fit to make a shower enclosure bigger, wider or taller. Most shower curtains average about 6 feet, if you are taller than six feet, your head and body could be exposed allowing water to bounce out of the shower. Custom doors can be built for a taller or a wider person. Custom showers can even be designed for handicap accessibility.

Custom Shower Doors have a warranty

There is not a shower curtain today that is designed to last three years. Every piece of hardware installed comes with a three year warranty from the manufacturer. When you get shower doors installed you will not have to worry about replacing or upkeep on these doors for years to come.

I really liked how you explained, “There is not a shower curtain today that is designed to last three years.” Now that is a really good point! My wife and I are having a house built for us so we’ve been going through all the detials of what we want in our home. We’ve recently been focusing on the master bathroom and what we want to do with our shower. There are so many options but we definitely like the idea of shower doors instead of a curtain. One benefit of that, as you mentioned, is it lasting longer. However, the benefit we like the most is how it looks; we like the style it would bring to our home. Thanks for the info, it was fun to read!

I really like the idea of getting a custom shower door, or even a full custom shower enclosure. I have never liked shower curtains because they get dirty too fast, so getting a door has always been my number one choice. I think I’ll have to have a contractor out so I can see what my options are.

This is some great information, and I appreciate your point that shower doors don’t need to be replaced as often as curtains do. My husband and I are going to remodel our master bathroom, and I’ve been considering our options for the shower. It would be nice to have something more long-term, so we’ll definitely look into having a glass door installed. Thanks for the great post!

I never realized that customer shower doors don’t need to be replaced nearly as often as a disposable shower curtain. I hate replacing my shower curtain every few months because it falls apart, so having a shower door would fix that problem very easily. I also like the idea of having a custom door so I can make it look how I want to match my bathroom exactly.

Great post! Shower places need to be more private I think and that can’t serve a shower curtain. You described great the other issues well. Thanks for sharing the tips as it was informative.

I really like how you can customize the height of the shower door. I’m 6’10 and when I hop into the shower I feel like Buddy the Elf when he’s trying to take a shower at Santa’s workshop. I’m definitely gonna go with the frame-less option especially after you mentioned they come with a warranty.

It’s nice that custom shower doors don’t need to be replaced as often. I’m all about saving money in the long run. If I can spend more money now to save money over time, it’s worth it.

Thanks for pointing out that you only need to clean shower doors with the same technique you would the rest of the shower. My husband and I are remodeling our bathroom to turn it into a real master bath. I think that switching out the curtain we currently have with a frameless shower door would be the way to go. We’ll just have to find someone near us who can install it for us.
